Das Rheingold and Die Walküre August 26 & 27
Because of the demands on producers, performers and facilities, you usually won’t find Wagner performances outside big cities with major opera houses. TUNDI offers a rare opportunity to experience these works in an intimate 750-seat ‘jewel box’, the Art Deco Latchis Theatre. As a team and cast, we believe we bring rich life experience and artistic discovery to these unknowable masterpieces.
In August 2022, TUNDI returns for the Wagner in Vermont Festival at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro, Vermont, USA. The heart of the festival will be two performances each of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, half of the epic, all-encompassing, essential work for our times, Der Ring des Nibelungen, the 'Ring Cycle'.
We exit the period from TUNDI's foundation in 2019, and the pandemic, with a highly ambitious program. This is a function not just of 'making a statement and our re-formulation after the pandemic, nor of our impatience as performers (these things are also there); we consider this work to be essential for our artists' lives, and for the possibility for impacting society in the ways we want.
The bookends of Festival Week are the paired performances of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre; and in between, the Festival Week activities, will be centered around a Valkyrie Flashmob. We encourage you to buff up your awesome battle-cries, and join the midweek sisterhood. (No need to identify as a "sister" for this activity!) We may also need some slain heroes for the Valkyries to pick over. The Wish-Maidens of Valhalla request the pleasure of your company, répondez s'il vous plaît. Festival Artists will give daily brief recitals of Wagner excerpts. Visiting lecturers will present on subjects as varied as Women in The Ring; Wagner and Anti-Semitism; the Semiotics and Symbolic Background of TUNDI's 2022 productions. We expect much more, we hope including comedy, a Nibelung anvil percussion workshop, we are sure you have never done that before...please tell us what else you would like to see!
Das Rheingold is an uninterrupted single act, 7pm-9:30.
Die Walküre starts at 4pm and is in three acts with two long breaks for refreshments and meals.
