Bridging Traditions: From Psalm to Mass

Congregation B’nai Shalom at 117 East Main Street in Westborough will be the site of the Assabet Valley Mastersingers concert with orchestra on Saturday, November 16th, 2019 at 8 pm. “Bridging Traditions: From Psalm to Mass” will feature two works born in times of tumult. Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass (Mass in Time of Distress) was composed during the Napoleonic Wars but foreshadowed Nelson’s victories. Chichester Psalms was conceived by Leonard Bernstein shortly after President Kennedy’s assassination and the murder of close friend Marc Blitzstein. In combining Jewish and Christian choral traditions Bernstein was implicitly pleading for peace in the young country of Israel. AVM’s Artistic Director Robert P. Eaton will conduct the ensemble including soloists soprano Dana Lynne Varga; mezzo Pamela Dellal; tenor Gregory Zavracky; and baritone John Salvi.
