Rantin’ Pipe and Tremblin’ String: Early Music of Scotland

Company:
Seven Times Salt

Featuring: Barbara Allen Hill, soprano and
Alastair Thompson, harpsichord

This program explores the unique crossroads of 17th and 18th-century Scottish folk and classical traditions. Homesick Scots, English music lovers, and Italian composers all found themselves bewitched by these simple melodies. You’ll hear music by Oswald, McGibbon, Matteis, and Bremner; traditional tunes for fiddle and pipes; and selections from early Scots sources including the Straloch lute and Dixon bagpipe manuscripts and the Scots Musical Museum. We’ll pay homage to Scottish drawing rooms and dance halls where the only difference between a fiddler and a violinist may have been the music in front of him!
