Early American Music Shape-Note Singing
Norumbega Harmony
In pre-revolutionary times, William Billings of Boston and his students created a new form of sacred music that replaced the colonial "lining out" practice of chanting psalms in New England. They traveled from parish to parish teaching singing regulated by meter and introduced numerous anthems into the repertoire. Come explore early American anthems and psalmody in a free participatory singing session. Have your turn to choose a tune. Music of Billings, Oliver Holden of Charlestown, Daniel Read, Supply Belcher, Southern Harmony tunes, and much more in a fun and low-key setting. Tunebooks available to borrow or buy.
