Free Early American Music Concert: Sacred Song by Daniel Belknap and His Circle
Norumbega Harmony
Daniel Belknap (1771-1815) of Framingham and his associates contributed to the religious and cultural formation of the early Republic in Massachusetts via their composition of hymns, psalms, and anthems for use in parishes and communities. The new form of psalms and anthems begun with William Billings of Boston in the 1770s spread to outlying communities, where local composers took it up. Belknap and Zedekiah Sanger (1751-1820), also of Framingham, led singing schools and published their works, in addition to carrying on farming and other daily activities.
Norumbega Harmony will perform music of Belknap, Sanger, Billings, Wood, and others to bring understanding of this musical heritage to the Metrowest area. Their music is sung to this day by shape-note singers around the country and abroad. Historical commentary by singing master Dr. Stephen Marini of Wellesley College. Sponsored by the Framingham Cultural Council.
