Once Upon the Wind

Company:
The Opera Theatre of Yale College

The Opera Theatre of Yale College cordially invites you to a virtual production of Theo Popov and Kate Light’s Once Upon the Wind on January 29th at 8pm Est. The audio recording is accompanied by a series of descriptive letters sent to each audience member which set the virtual stage for the opera. Through this unique production format, we aim to challenge conventional notions of how opera is presented by embedding the audience experience in the space of your home and letters you hold in your hands. Through the opera’s probing themes of loss and living through grief, we hope to share an experience with our audience that promotes empathy and celebrates life during these difficult times.

Registration Form/Instructions:
To register for the opera, please fill out the following form. The series of letters will be delivered to you prior to the performance. You may choose to receive them by mail (if you have a US address) or by email if you prefer. FOR AN OPTIMAL EXPERIENCE, PLEASE DO NOT READ THE LETTERS PRIOR TO THE PERFORMANCE. At 8 PM EST on the day of the performance, you will be emailed the link to a YouTube video that will play the opera audio and prompt you to read the letters at the appropriate times.

The deadline for registration is January 29th, 2021 at 3 PM EST, but please note that if you would like to receive letters by mail, you must register by 6:00 PM EST on January 17th. Register here: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLScJOnR8.../viewform...

Synopsis:
As Once Upon the Wind opens, a soldier has just captured Death in a magic sack to save the life of his dying mother. The Domovoy finds the sack and takes it for himself. The soldier recovers the sack from the Domovoy by trading some pastries and a blanket for it. He takes it to his mother to tell her the good news. However, she is horrified and makes the soldier free Death, so that Death may end the suffering of all dying souls around the world. The soldier obeys, and Death flies away with the mother’s soul. Distraught, the soldier begs Death to come back and take his soul as well, but the Domovoy tells him that Death is too afraid of the soldier to ever return. Left alone with the tattered, empty sack, the soldier is doomed to walk the hills, forever calling for Death.
