Sandström: A Messiah for Our Time

Company:
Cantata Singers and New England Philharmonic

Messiah, by the Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström, was commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival and the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart to commemorate the 2009 Handel anniversary year. The work is based on Charles Jennen’s English libretto that Handel set in his famous oratorio. Many critics believe this Messiah to be worthy of the original from 260 years ago, and we’re thrilled to share the stage with new friends at the New England Philharmonic in its first performance on the East Coast!

"What a wonderful opportunity to bring together these two prominent Boston musical organizations to perform the Messiah by Sandström! This work constantly responds to our previous experiences of the text, which is inextricably bound up with Handel's musical ideas, and portrays emotions at times ecstatic and somber, insightful and energetic. It has only been performed a few times in the world, and we greatly look forward to sharing it with the public in April."
— Noah Horn, Cantata Singers Music Director (Co-conductor)

"Sandström’s Messiah is such a thrilling piece to perform. The novel text painting makes the words come alive together with the orchestral resources of our time!"
— Tianhui Ng, New England Philharmonic Music Director (Co-conductor)
