About Anastasia - Anastasia Black, soprano, is dedicated to bringing rarely performed music to audiences, especially music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras, and music by female composers. She recently gave a lecture recital on the life and works of Fanny Hensel, and in 2019 she curated a program of French and Italian Baroque music titled From Shipwreck to Sleep, which featured music by 17th century female composers. As a concert soloist, Anastasia has appeared in Bach’s Cantata No. 1, Schütz’s Magnificat, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, John Rutter's Magnificat, Bach’s Cantata No. 92, Fauré’s Requiem, and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. She sings with Ensemble Lyrae and Nightingale Vocal Ensemble, and is a staff singer at First Lutheran Church in Boston. Anastasia holds a Master’s Degree in Early Music from Longy School of Music and a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. She maintains a private voice studio in Melrose and is on the faculty at Clark University and Early Music Week at World Fellowship Center in Conway, NH. www.anastasiablack.com
About Olivia - Olivia Schurke is a mezzo-soprano based in Boston, where she recently earned her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at Boston University. Last year with Boston University’s Opera Institute, Olivia performed the roles of Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina, Meg in Mark Adamo’s Little Women and Isabel in Daniel Catán’s La Hija de Rappaccini. Olivia was featured as the mezzo soloist for James Stephensen’s Symphony No. 2 with the BU Wind Ensemble at Boston’s Symphony Hall. In the first year of her studies also with Boston University’s Opera Institute, Olivia performed the roles of Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Taller Daughter in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up. Olivia also serves as the Alto Section Leader at First Lutheran Church of Boston where she is frequently a featured soloist. www.oliviaschurke.com
About Jonathan - Jonathan Wessler has served as Kantor at First Lutheran Church since 2016. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from the Eastman School of Music, studying with William Porter. He previously earned the Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studying with David Boe, and the Master of Sacred Music degree from the University of Notre Dame, studying with Craig Cramer. He additionally mentored under Sherry Seckler and Christiaan Teeuwsen. He holds the Associate’s certificate from the American Guild of Organists and was a finalist in the 2007 Arthur Poister Organ Competition. Kantor Wessler maintains an active career as a recitalist and continuo player, appearing frequently with the Cantata Singers, the Concord Chorus, and the Peoria Bach Festival. He is the general editor of the Leupold Foundation's edition of the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach and a member of the Lutheran Missal Project editorial team, and gives presentations and lectures on early Lutheran music and liturgy.
