Wilkinson Young Singers Fund Recital : "Girl"
Wilkinson Young Singers Fund
Featuring first-prize winners of the 2023 and 2024 Wilkinson Young Singers Award, Emma Robertson (soprano) and Grace Heldridge (mezzo-soprano), accompanied by pianist and coach Matthew Larson, are presenting a recital based on the feminine experience.
"In a time where the clock of social progress is being forcibly turned backwards, we decided to create a program that celebrates the power, passion and humor of the female experience, in all its fabulous and not-so fabulous facets. With the added knowledge that March is Women’s History Month and that this year’s Wilkinson Young Singers Award Concert features two women, it made perfect sense.
We began by making a “pile” of music that we knew,, sort-of-knew, and want-to-know, and studied it to see what groupings might reveal themselves. Simultaneously, we spit-balled various titles for each section of the program (four of which made the cut) and experimented with placing various songs in each category. The four groups we settled on (“Solidarity,” “Breaking Up/Breaking Down,” “Girl Power” and “Transcendence”) represent four major experiences uniquely defined in womanhood, but translate universally to all people.
The program includes a large number of duets - this is not an accident. The female experience is often one that is shared with other women, and that camaraderie is important for us to emphasize, especially in these times. We need each other more than ever, and exploring that need through this music has been a remarkable journey for us. We hope it’s as transformative for you!"
